Day 7 – May 26, 2025 – Venice, Italy

After getting to bed so late, I was surprised I was wide awake at 6:30 am so got up and checked email, played my Wordle/Quordle/Octordle (lol!) and then started going through pictures on the blog. I think the workers woke me up and apparently John was tired as he seemed to sleep through it and didn’t get up until almost 8 am, which is LATE for him. I think we are both still dealing with time change and jet lag, or that’s what I’m going to say it is, lol!

Today we are just planning to do a bunch of walking around so there was no hurry this morning, which is what I like. I threw in another load of laundry, on the Rapido cycle this time, which took no time at all! Also, since I need to wash my hair today, which is a process, I did a quick work out and got in the shower. Since I’m going curly for this trip and not straightening at all, I’m used to having a diffuser to blow dry a cast on my hair, which helps with frizziness. I didn’t bring my diffuser since it’s so bulky, so I had to let it air dry, which takes a lot longer.

John did a workout while I was in the shower and then we had a late breakfast and headed out the door about 11 am. Our BNB is in the Cannaregio section of Venice, and we decided to walk in the Dorsoduro section as we did not go over there back in 2023. Most of this section faces the water so we walked all the way around and then explored parts in the middle. We stopped and went inside the Santa Maria della Salute basilica and walked around. It’s just amazing to see how old some of these churches are!

We loved all the little canals and passageways as well as the scenery walking around the waterfront. We both were getting hungry so we decided to start walking back towards our area and came across a little place, Osteria Al Pesador, on the water where people watching was good! John had the fresh catch of the day, which was sea bass, and I had grilled prawns with scampi and vegetables. John’s fish came out whole, which is normal for her, and our waitress asked if she could filet it for him, which was great! She did it in no time as it would have taken either of us forever and we would still have left lots of bones.

After a great light lunch, we headed back to our section of Venice and luckily came across a Bialetti store which sells the pods for the machines. Our BNB has one, but they only have the full-strength stuff and while we like it, we usually drink decaf. I’ve had full-strength the last two days and I can definitely tell I’ve had caffeine!

We made it back to the BNB, hung out for a bit then decided to have an aperitif. We found a spot right over the canal from where we are and had an Aperol. We had no intention of eating anything, but as we sat there we decided to share something knowing we’d be hungry later.  We split the shrimp risotto, which was still too much for me and then finished it up with panna cotta with fruit on top. Another couple, from Austria, sat beside us so we chatted with them for a while. He asked me where I was from as he was trying to distinguish where I lived in the states. When I told him NC he started laughing as he said he watches a YouTube channel with people from SC and thought he recognized the accent. I don’t think I have an accent, but apparently to him I do, lol!

We headed back to the BNB and called it an early night. Tomorrow we have our Prosecco tour and we have to catch the train in the morning to Conegliano, where we will be meeting up with our guide. Looking forward to this! Ciao!

Saint Mary of Health – The Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute stands on the narrow point of Punta della Dogana, between the Grand Canal and the Giudecca Canal, making it a prominent sight from the water near Piazza San Marco. Built as a votive offering after the 1630 plague, it is the most recent of Venice’s plague churches. Designed by Baldassare Longhena in Baroque style, construction began in 1631. Many artworks inside reference the Black Death.
Couldn’t help myself, it was just sitting there!
They have some unique door handles in Venice, so I’ve been on the lookout for them.
A light lunch of grilled prawns and veggies.
Our waitress preparing John’s sea bass for him.
Some yummy bruschetta!
Love the presentation of the shrimp risotto!
We went with the panna cotta again, not as good as the last one, but still good.
Another gorgeous sunset in Venice!
