Day 41 – June 29, 2025 – Foiano, Italy

Today we headed to Castiglione del Lago, which is about a 30-minute drive from the villa. It is on the western shore of Lake Trasimeno and is in the Umbria region of Italy. It is officially listed as one of the “most beautiful villages” in Italy. It is another medieval town that has walls to protect it and was originally subject to rule by the Etruscans and Romans. Most of the early defensive walls around the town can still be seen.

The town is not big at all so it does not take long to walk it, but it has some cute shops and great views of the lake. We found a place for a café for John and Vance, Michelle got a café d’orzo, which is a barley coffee, and I got a gelato. We also ended up buying some cookies to take back to the villa, because we don’t have enough food to eat, lol!

We headed back to the villa, got a last load of laundry done, had lunch, got some packing done, then just hung out for a bit before dinner. Tonight, we cooked some steak on the grill and had leftovers of fruit and veggies, and pizza, lol! We totally forgot about the leftover tiramisu, and we had bought cookies, oh well 😊

After dinner we enjoyed playing some Hand and Foot. Hard to believe it is our last night in the villa. What a wonderful experience and we are so glad we found this great place to stay for a month! Lorenzo and Fiorella have been the best hosts and have made us feel at home since day one. Ciao!

The stone archway that belongs to the ancient defensive walls that once enclosed Castiglione del Lago. It was historically a fortified peninsula-town, so several gates like this were built to control access. In the back you can see Lake Trasimeno.
Another great view of the lake.
Standing on the upper terrace, another great view of the lake and the surrounding Umbrian-Tuscan hills. Lake Trasimeno is Italy’s 4th largest lake.
The Piazza Mazzini, the most central square of the town.
Inside the entrance archway of Palazzo della Corgna looking outward toward the town. The flags represent (left) the red municipal flag of Castiglione del Lago, (center) the Italian national flag, and (right) the European Union flag.
At the Belvedere lookout with Lake Trasimeno and the Umbrian hills in the background.
One of the frescoed Renaissance ceilings inside the Palazzo della Corgna. It was completed in the mid-1500s.
Inside the courtyard of the Rocca del Leone (Fortress of the Lion). It is an open-air amphitheater set up inside the castle walls. The stone walls with crenelations were built in the 13th century and was a five-sided fortress with massive corner towers. The one on the right is one of the original defensive towers.
The tower in the background is the main keep of the Rocca del Leone. It is the tallest and most dominant point in the fortress.
Another great shot of Lake Trasimeno with the wind/kite surfers.
Another beautiful sunset, and our last, in the Tuscan countryside……
