Day 3 – June 22, 2024 – Eskifjordur, Iceland

Day 3 – June 22, 2024 – Eskifjordur, Iceland

Today we were up at a decent time, grabbed a quick breakfast and headed to our meeting place for our excursion, the waterfall hike to the Hengifoss waterfall. Our guide, whose name we can’t remember, was quite a character and reminded John and I of someone from Harry Potter or the Hobbit. While the Icelanders speak English, their accent is very heavy, so it is still hard to understand them at times and they speak fast as well.

We were driven up to the mountains which took almost an hour. We were let out, told to go up one side and then come back down the other side to get different views. Going up was exactly that, straight up, which ended up being about a 750-foot elevation climb. Piece of cake after all the hiking out west! We got as far as we comfortably felt going, mainly because the area was very wet and muddy, and we really did not have the right shoes on. The scenery was beautiful, and we got plenty of pictures. We hiked back down the other side and when we were probably a little over halfway down, we noticed a woman holding on to her husband and he was having a very difficult time walking. John and I asked them (Mike & Linda) if they needed help and found out he had slipped coming down and felt he had pulled a muscle in his groin. We managed to get him to an area for him to sit and rest a bit and found out they were from Nashville, Tennessee. We helped him down the rest of the way and got him safely on the bus. We are hoping he is okay and can enjoy the rest of the cruise.

We got back to the ship, cleaned up and then at 4 p.m. the head bartender, Tiho, conducted a tasting experience with the Regent Line Signature Cocktails. There are seven ships in the fleet and each ship has its own signature cocktail. He mixed up all seven and gave us about a two ounce pour while giving us information about each ship. It was very interesting and very tasty!

We had dinner again at the Compass Rose and it was much better this time. They have two sides to the menu, one you can order from every day and the other is the chef’s options, which changes daily.

Another early night for us as we are still getting acclimated to the time change and the lack of darkness at night!  Tomorrow we will be in Torshavn (Faroe Islands), Denmark and we have the Streymoy Mountain Hike. Nite all 😊

ABOUT ESKIFJORDUR – taken from the daily newsletter

Eskifjordur is a picturesque fishing town located in the eastern fjords of Iceland, with a population of around 1100 people. It has a rich maritime history, with its economy heavily reliant on the fishing industry. It has a good harbor and is home to one of Iceland’s largest fishing companies.

The town is nestled along the shores of the Eskifjordur fjord, with its iconic, red-colored fishing sheds lining the coastline. Towering over the town is the 985-meter (3200 feet) Holmatindur Mountain, a popular hiking destination that offers stunning views for those who reach the summit.

Coming into port
One of the many waterfalls
On the bus heading to our excursion – what lovely weather, lol!
Yes, it was still cold enough for snow!
The trail leading up to the waterfall that you can see waaaaayyyyy in the background.
We were heading to the upper left corner of the picture!
Basalt columns, which result from the slow cooling and solidification of lava.
On the way back down from the waterfall.
See, he looks like something out of Harry Potter, lol!
Taken out of the bus window (hence the glare) of the lupine flower. This is the Alaskan lupine and and got there due to one person who was selecting plants from Alaska that he thought would do good in the harsh environment. Unfortunately, Icelanders feel that the lupine is an invasive species and if you want to start an argument, just say lupine to the natives, lol! I think they are beautiful!
Tiho, the head bartender giving us samples of all of the Regent signature drinks.
The drinks in order of being made.
A bottle of Louis XIII cognac, that is VERY expensive, like about $4000 a bottle. We did not taste this, lol! It has been aged for a minimum of 70 years.
One of the many wonderful desserts we had, this was a berry tart, John’s favorite!
