Day 27 – June 14, 2024 – Henderson, NV to Wendell, NC
We were up at 6 a.m. and finished up the rest of the packing and had our last breakfast here with eggs, sausage, and fruit. We headed out the door about 10 a.m. as we needed to run the poor car through a car wash as she was filthy and fill up the tank.
We made it to the rental car place to turn the car in and then hauled everything into the Southwest Terminal. There was a long line to get our bags checked (we had to go to the desk as John carried one of his guns with us and we had to have it checked first) but we got there early so it wasn’t a big deal. Our first flight left about 1:30 and we landed in Midway Chicago about 6:30 p.m., had about a 1 ½ layover and then boarded for Raleigh at 8:30 p.m. with a 1 ½ flight. With all the time differences it wasn’t too bad. Basically 3 hours from NV to IL and then 1 ½ hours from IL to NC. The flight from IL to NC was bumpy so there was no beverage service. We ended up getting a sandwich while at Midway, which basically just sat in my stomach. We got in at 11:10 p.m. EST and then had to wait over 20 minutes for the baggage to come out and we were the only plane there! RDU is horrible with baggage, especially if it’s a late flight coming in. We had a car waiting to drive us home as we didn’t want to leave our car at the airport that long, so once the bags were finally out, we didn’t have to wait for the car.
We had a pleasant young lady that drove us home and her son is in the military so most of the conversation centered around that. We pulled in about 12:15 a.m. Our son, Bobby, had driven up earlier on his way up to Maryland for an overnight, so we stayed up for awhile chatting with him. I crawled into bed at 1:30 a.m. and then was up at 6:15! The time changes are going to get me for a few days 😊
It was a wonderful trip and I’m so glad we did it! Thanks to John, for being the planner, you did a great job!
TAKEAWAYS FROM OUR WILD WEST TRIP
- Dry heat is still hot heat!
- You always need A LOT of water with you. Liquid IVs were a life saver!
- My skin has never been so dry in my entire life, lol!
- Neither has our noses! Saline spray was our best friend!
- Be sure to have local/state maps.
- We packed stuff we never wore and bought stuff we needed. Need to work on thinning out what we bring.
- We brought our Roku, which was nice when we did want to watch some TV, we could watch our own stuff.
- Our vehicle was a Mitsubishi Outlander, whom John name Gertrude, and she kicked butt on this whole trip. A little slow, but still got the work done. She was filthy before we popped her through the car wash before we turned her in after being out in boonies, lol!
- It’s a lot easier when you can get prepared foods, even though we cooked every breakfast except for one, and most of the dinners.
- Time zones were confusing as hell. We dealt with three different zones, and it totally messed us up. Again, AZ doesn’t recognize Daylight Savings Time, which was the real kicker.
- Take lots of pictures, even if you don’t post them. We are getting better about it as they are memories.
- I know I posted a lot of breweries, but I swear folks, we didn’t just drink, we hiked our butts off and burned a lot of calories!
