Day 14 – June 2, 2025 – Foiano della Chiana, Italy – DISCLAIMER – I used ChatGPT for a couple of the picture comments to help remind me of what we saw.
After not sleeping well (me) and getting up early, we enjoyed our coffee sitting outside and enjoying the sunrise. We cooked breakfast and ate outside as well since there was a great breeze blowing.
After breakfast we all decided to walk into the town of Fioano just see what we could see. Lorenzo told us there was a back way cutting through his property and the neighboring one so we took off and headed to town. It took about 25 minutes to walk and there was some shade along the way, which was nice. We found the little grocery store and were amazed that as soon as we walked in, there was these huge containers of wine where you fill up a bottle and it was 2.10 euro for a liter bottle! We knew we would want to try some of it so walked around the store to see what else they had, then headed to the town. Today was Republic Day so a lot of stores were closed, but we managed to come across a ceremony of some type so stopped to watch. “Republic Day, or Festa della Repubblica, is a national holiday in Italy celebrated on June 2 each year. It commemorates the 1946 referendum in which Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic, marking the birth of the Italian Republic.” They were placing flowers on a statue that commemorated soldiers from WWI.
After walking the town and not finding anywhere for lunch, we decided to head back to the BNB with a stop at the little store we passed for some last minute things, including the wine! There were three different types, two red, one white so the guys filled one each and they carried them back to the BNB along with some snacks. John found some sliced pork with a yummy sauce and Patty found some pasta, so we had that for lunch.
Two loads of laundry were done and hanging to dry while we hung out at the pool for a while. We had happy hour with some cheese and crackers and John cooked some chicken and beef while I roasted some potatoes, carrots, and onions. There is a learning curve with the appliances, especially the oven so they were not cooked as well as I’d like, but we muddled through it.
After dinner we played a game of hand and foot, the girls won, and then we called it a night. Tomorrow is a full day with two winery tours and a couple stops along the way. Barbara will be picking us up at 9:50 so not too early of a start. A great day in Italy – ciao!
