Day 60 – July 18, 2025 – Waterville to Westport, Ireland

Good breakfast and packed up ready to go. On our way to our next stop, Westport (about a 4 ½ hour drive), we will head towards the Cliffs of Moher. A brief history of the cliffs:

  • The cliffs are in County Clare and are among the country’s most iconic and visited natural landmarks.
  • They were formed over 320 million years ago and composed primarily of shale and sandstone, which have preserved fossils and sedimentary structures revealing ancient river and marine environments.
  • The cliffs stretch for about 8.7 miles and rise up to 702 feet at their highest point near O’Brien’s Tower (built in 1835).
  • The cliffs were featured in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Princess Bride.

We headed to Tarbert to catch the ferry that crosses the Shannon estuary (which cuts off an hour of travel!) The ferry is about a 20-minute ride. We stopped in Lahinch at Vaughan’s on the Prom where we had a seaside view and split a burger. We then made our stop at the Cliffs of Moher and got some great pictures!

We had a 2 ½ hour drive to Westport where we checked in to our next BNB, the Carrabaun House. Our host, Angela, is a lovely woman who is very proud of her house. It is such a relaxing area. The room was nice, though we did have to share a full-size bed and the bathroom was very small, but the location was great. The views from the front of the house are beautiful as you can see Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick.

Dinner was at Luseas, which is part of the Westport Coast Hotel, and we split a salad and the sea bass. They were very busy, so dinner lingered longer than we liked as we were ready to call it a night after the day of travel.

Headed back to the BNB and called it a night. Tomorrow, we plan to do some hiking in Connemara National Park, which is about an hour drive away.

Today we leave Waterville and catch N70 and go up the left side of the coast on our way to Westport. With the exception of the Cliffs of Moher, there wasn’t really too much to see.
We walked back down to the water and John found himself, lol!

On our way to Westport
The ferry, Shannon Breeze, in Tarbert.

So this is how narrow the roads are in Ireland and it was like that in Scotland too! These are considered two lane roads, yikes!
Taken outside the restaurant, Vaughan’s on the Prom, in Lahinch.
Love the pictures we got!
Dinner time!
